I grind my teeth constantly! I cannot stop! I wear a mouth guard when I sleep, which I could not live without. Problem is, I do it during the day also. I have a stiff achy jaw that pops sometimes. I also get bad headaches and ear aches, recently difficult to hear sometimes also. Are these symptoms of TMJ, and what exactly is that?
Also, any advise as to how to stop grinding? Is there some type of muscle relaxing meds designed for this? Any suggestions are much appreciated!
Teeth grinding.....TMJ?
chewing gum is really bad for tmj and makes it worse because it%26#039;s caused from clenching your jaw and chewing gum does just that. Those are symptoms of tmj. And it is an injury to the tissues (bone, cartilidge injury) at the temporomandibular joint which is where your jaw connects to your skull.
And tmj is NOT lockjaw. Lockjaw is tetanus. It%26#039;s an infection. Tmj is an injury. It can make your jaw lock up, but it is not lockjaw.
Reply:I have the same problem, but dont have a mouth guard. TMJ, isn%26#039;t that lock-jaw? Could be nerves, try chewing gum. Muscle relaxants do help, but don%26#039;t think there is a certain one. Anxiety pill could help too.
Reply:If you write me at my email address I will send you my denturest address, he is a brain when it comes to why and how to fix it.
It sounds like your jaw is out of place and needs to be set into place. I know this is going to shock you, but put a glove on and bit down on your finger using only your back teeth. Do this from the side. You will pop the jaw back into place, and not hurt your finger.

Reply:Thats how mine started I was 18 im now 23 and TMJ is the worse thing that has happened to me up to this point. I regret not treating it earlier. I cant sleep at night cause my muscles all over my head feel so weird. IT SUCKS!! You should get it treated.

Bruxism-teeth grinding...after SSRI?
i have acquired a day time teeth grinding(bruxism) after taking anti depressant (sertaline- ssri) i cant stop the medince but i want to stop my teeth grinding..doest really happen at night....please help.....
Bruxism-teeth grinding...after SSRI?
I have a similar habit when stressed despite SSRI%26#039;s. I mainly have it at night now. I wear a splint to help me. It is likely that if you have it during the day you will have it at night. I was able to break the habit during the day. I did this by making sure that I asked myself regularly during the day %26quot;am I grinding%26quot;. It takes a while to break the habit. It can be broken. It will take patience and persistence. If you work with someone who can ask you through out the day are you grinding. It is helpful. Or maybe get your partner to txt you.
Reply:Teeth grinding is a fairly common side effect of SSRI%26#039;s.
I suffered with it as well after beginning anti depressant therapy and developed terrible headaches as a result of the constant grinding and jaw clenching.
There are mouth pieces that you can buy at pharmacies for around $20 that are made to be molded to your individual tooth/mouth shape and prevent the grinding. These are difficult to wear during the day though if you%26#039;re required to speak at all.
A mouthpiece made for you by a dentist fits much better, though much more expensive, around $300, and can be worn during the day with minimal effects on your speech.
How long have you been on the SSRI?
The good news is that many of the side effects related to taking SSRI%26#039;s often go away after 8-12 weeks or so.
However, the damage the bruxism may do would be permanant.
Please speak with your doctor as he/she may have a better solution.
It always amazed me how many STRANGE side effects SSRI%26#039;s can cause!

Is teeth grinding (bruxism) always related to stress?
I%26#039;m not sure about this ? I%26#039;ve also heard parasites, neurological disorders, etc will cause it. Have you ever heard of someone losing their teeth because of it. It would be ironic if the stress from worrying about teeth grinding in turned caused more grinding!
Is teeth grinding (bruxism) always related to stress?
Neurological, yes, parasites, yes. Also if it%26#039;s just a habit. You can%26#039;t lose your teeth, but you can crack them, which the dentist will then have to either fix or just take out. Best remedy: bite guard for night. I use one... I just wish that the insurance would have paid for it =(
But a majority of the time, it%26#039;s stress.
Reply:It%26#039;s very common in sleep.
Not much you can do about it.
Valium might help.
Reply:Also do to hunger sometimes.
Reply:hahha dont worry its probably just stress. go to the orthodontist and ask him/her to make you a night guard so you dont grind at night and it will help.
Reply:you know I was looking that up on the internet earlier, because someone mentioned it, and it said that it was due to stress. It is also thought to come from your teeth being unaligned. I clench my teeth at night, and I do believe that is why.
Reply:sleep is the most common time for it and it isn%26#039;t always about stress, you can get a teeth gaurd for night which really help. your teeth won%26#039;t fall out but you will seriously wear them down. go to the dentist and they cast you the night gaurd.
Reply:apparently i grinded my teeth in my sleep after my mom died.
Reply:I used to grind my teeth a lot, you know those mouth protectors football players and boxers use? Try one of those out.....if you are grinding through those then you may need to see a dentist.
Stress is a big reason people grind. But another reason is simply how you live your life. If you are always tense, angry, annoyed by the ignorance around you etc, you will find that you may take that out on your teeth.
Also if you have had bad dental care, your teeth will grind, If you have a Crown or Temp that is sitting too high, you will try to grind it down in your sleep, only to wake up with the worst headache ever.
If you are constantly pessimistic though, I would look to finding a hobby, a new lover, or something to that accord to try and make you happy.

Bad case of teeth-grinding?
Hey!
So I%26#039;ve been a bad teeth-grinder for a few years and it%26#039;s gotten to the point where some of my teeth are getting pretty sharp/pointy at the places where my grinding is wearing them down. Not only does my jaw hurt in the mornings, but my mouth also tastes ever so slightly of blood when I wake. My dentist is afraid that I%26#039;m going to grind my teeth down far enough that it will cause serious problems. All of the mouth-guards that I%26#039;ve tried so far are not helpful because they are uncomfortable enough that it%26#039;s hard to sleep, and when I do sleep I chew pretty much right through the mouthguard after a few months. I guess I%26#039;m just a nervous, fidgety, stressed person to begin with.
Is there anything I can do to get rid of this problem? I could keep trying mouthguards, but I%26#039;d really like something that could get to the root of the problem. What causes the grinding, mentally, and is there anything I can do calm down that part of the brain???
Thanks.
Bad case of teeth-grinding?
i clamp my jaws shut non stop, actually as i write this im doing it, i have to keep reminding myself to oven my jaws!
ive done alot of damage in my teeth already, 5 fillings, one got a crack right through so i had to get it pulled out, ouch
and its just getting worse, i find the more sleep i get the more relaxed i am
BUT its still not helping that much, i dunno what to do!!!
GOOD LUCK, im with ya
Reply:I had this problem too and I was told that teeth grinding is usually due to stress
Reply:Bruxism is when you clench or grind your teeth.
People can clench and grind subconsciously during both the day and night, although sleep-related bruxism is often the bigger problem because it is harder to control.
The cause of bruxism is not completely agreed upon, but daily stress may be the trigger in many people. Some people probably clench and never feel symptoms. Whether or not bruxism causes pain and other problems may be a complicated mix of factors -- how much stress you are under, how long and tightly you clench and grind, whether your teeth are misaligned, your posture, ability to relax, diet, sleeping habits, and other factors. Each person is probably different.
Reply:Go to the pharmacy and tell them what you are experiencing there is a product there and it is a soft plastic plate you can sleep with in your mouth so you cannot grind your teeth.
Reply:Try acupuncture. Have a friend with similar problem, she did the acupuncture and voila she stopped grinding and clenching her teeth. (she%26#039;s an acupuncturist)

Teeth grinding/tongue biting...?
i have been grinding my teeth and biting my tongue in my sleep. any advice? i don%26#039;t think i could wear one of those night guard mouth peice things. my husband wakes me up when i am grinding my teeth. my tongue gets pretty sore as well.
Teeth grinding/tongue biting...?
Why do you think you couldn%26#039;t wear %26quot;one of those night guard mouth piece things?%26quot; Of course you could!
Consult your dentist. Mouth guards and bite splints come in all shapes and sizes. Some fit over all your teeth; some just fit to the front 4.
If you really want help with your problem, you should talk to your dentist who should be able to find a workable solution.
FYI: adjusting to something in your mouth is mostly about attitude. If you tell yourself you can%26#039;t, you won%26#039;t be able to.
Reply:put a sock in ur mouth, make sure its clean, ur teeth wont grind and ur tongue wont get bitten. i know it sounds bizarre but i think it cud do the trick
Reply:Consult a dentist. I also grind my teeth when I feel stressed. The stress is the reason
Reply:Go to your dentist- he can form a mouthpiece that you won%26#039;t even notice, and save your teeth from the wear- you can break them !!!! An RN...
Reply:The mouth guard is the only answer. It took me awhile to get use to it but just like everything else once it becomes a habit/part of your everyday routine you will not even notice you have it on.
Reply:get a night guard made by the dentist. we make very thin ones that go around your teeth. we charge $50, but i hear in the states it is $500. beyond that, if you have any mercury amalgam fillings, get them replaced. teeth grinding is one of the symptoms of mercury poisoning.
Reply:You should really try to wear a night guard. I know they aren%26#039;t ideal for comfort, but they are certainly worth it in so many ways. 1. Your teeth won%26#039;t wear down, therefore, you will save LOTS of money down the line 2. You won%26#039;t have jaw pain 3. Your husband will be able to sleep! If you can%26#039;t wear the night/occlusal guard, try wearing whitening trays (that are made by your dentist). That will at least lessen the sound and the wear on your teeth.

Teeth Grinding Help!?
Ever since I started college I began grinding my teeth. I have a night guard from the dentist, but it broke. I can still use it because of the medal things sticking out to make it stay in my mouth. The only problem is it is in two peices and there is a hole when I wear it. Can you loose teeth when you grind and do they ever grow back after they are gone or chipped off?
Thanks!
Teeth Grinding Help!?
No, after teeth have been ground down, you are stuck with them. I had some porcelain crowns put over eight of my teeth
and two teeth were ground down so small that the crowns kept coming off. You would be better off having your dentist make you another night guard, perhaps a little thicker this time so you won%26#039;t break it. The ones in the drug stores and big box stores are really flimsy compared to the ones that a dentist can make for you, plus the night guards are made by a dentist%26#039;s laboratory especially to fit your teeth, which might make the night guard more comfortable for you. I used to grind my teeth really bad, but now I take medication at night to relax me and I no longer grind my teeth, or at least no where as badly as I used to do. A damaged, chipped, or tooth damaged from clenching your jaws or night grinding need to be repaired by a reliable dentist. These kinds of problems do not go away on their own. And yes, I also have a TMJ problem, as well.
Good luck to you!! :-)
Reply:I do the same...you can get a new night guard from a drugstore...they do the same thing at a fraction of the cost, or so I heard.
Reply:do not listen to the first answerer. Dental guards are especially made so the person does not choke to death. You can get another, although you may want to focus on why your grinding your teeth. Possibly a tmj issue?

Help with grinding teeth?
I grind my teeth at night unknowingly. I can%26#039;t afford a dental guard from the dentist. I tried an over the counter one and I wore it one night and when I woke up the next morning my jaw hurt so bad, it hurt to open and close my mouth (i have NEVER had that happen before). What can I do to help the grinding, if anything, before I ruin my teeth!?? Is that Colgate Luminous toothpaste good for tooth grinding or what? Thank you!
Help with grinding teeth?
The best option for you is a mouthguard, or the technical term, bit splint, made by your dentist. I know the cost is outrageous! Some insurance companies will cover 1 per lifetime (of the hard guard). The office I work in has 2 options, a hard bite splint, usually costing around $500.00, or a soft bit split, costing around $100.00. We take molds of your teeth for the soft guard too and make it in our office. It%26#039;s made of a material that is thicker than a bleach tray, but pretty much made the same way. A lot of my patients choose this, mostly because of cost, and they do work better than the store bought, %26#039;boil and mold%26#039; mouthguards. You will have to replace the soft guard more often, since it%26#039;s a softer material and you will gradually grind through it over time.
The store bought molds aren%26#039;t the best because they aren%26#039;t very custom to your teeth, and can cause other TMJ issues. It sounds like you are already experiencing some of those. If a patient of mine looses a bite splint, I do recommend them getting a store bought one temporarily if they can%26#039;t go without their professional one for a few days to a week (depending if it%26#039;s made in office or if they have to send it to the lab).
It is important for you to get a mouthguard, especially if you have a lot of wear on your teeth. You are grinding off enamel, and with loss of enamel, you can get sensitvity, can get decay more easily through the thin enamel, more prone to chipped teeth, especially in the front, and you can even ruin your plane of occlusion (a fancy word meaning losing function of your overall bite). Some of these things like chipped teeth can lead into more expensive fixes in the future like crowns or veneers to restore the chipped, thin teeth. Sometimes people grind through the enamel, into the dentin (the second layer of the tooth), and even into the pulp chamber (that contains your nerve and blood supply), which would lead to a root canal, and most likely crown. Those 2 things would be expensive, like a $1,500.00 tooth! I have also seen people grinding so hard that it will irritate the nerve in a particular tooth and lead to a root canal that way. Not because of wear into the pulp chamber, but chronically aggravating a tooth, and the nerve can only take so much brunt until it turns into an abcess.
I%26#039;m not trying to give you the scare tactic, but I am just pointing out how important bite splints are to people to grind or clench. I know it is expensive, but as one other person said, talk to your dentist about a payment plan, or see if they offer the cheaper custom soft guard. If you have insurance, find out if they cover a hard guard at all. It%26#039;s worth checking.
When you do get a guard, it will take some time to get used to it. It will feel odd at first, and you will probably find yourself waking up and taking it out at night, but don%26#039;t give up. As I say it, people get %26#039;married%26#039; to they guard and can%26#039;t sleep without it once they get used to it! Not to mention it does save your teeth, occlusion, TMJ joint in the long run, and it will save you money in the long run too for saving needs for bigger restorative work in the future.
No toothpaste or swish, etc. is going to help your grinding or %26#039;fix%26#039; any worn areas of your teeth. Once enamel is worn away, it%26#039;s gone. Toothpastes like that are good for enamel that is weakened (by the early signs of decay or decalcification), because it can help remineralize the enamel. That means it%26#039;s basically re-strengthening enamel that is already there, it won%26#039;t build up any more enamel. Some toothpastes like that can help with sensitivity too, so if you are having sensitive teeth to cold or sweets, try Sensodyne toothpaste, or Colgate or Crest for sensitive teeth.
Check with other dentists in your area too for costs, etc. Each office is a bit different. Good Luck!
Reply:Talk to your dentist office and tell them your problem and ask if they can put you on a payment plan. The dentist will create a guard for your teeth from a specialized mold - - - fitted just for you. And when you have dental work done, take the guard with you - - - he should make adjustments to the guard for free. I%26#039;ve had my guard for at least 10 years and it is still great. Trust me, if you want to prevent future problems, you%26#039;ll work with the dentist and make payments to get the right thing for your mouth.
After I had children, I suppose the stress contributed to my teeth grinding problem. Within a few years, my front teeth became thin - - - - you can shine a light behind them and see the cracks. The tooth guard works, doesn%26#039;t make my mouth sore, but it does take a few nights to get used to.
Reply:I would try maybe breaking in the mouth guard, maybe wearing it for a little while around the house. Start with a half hour, try taking a nap with it. You should start to get used it it. But it has to be gradually.
Reply:I%26#039;de recommend the night guard the dentist makes for you. A lot of dentists take a payment plan called care credit. You could check that out, I think it%26#039;s carecredit.com.

Teeth grinding and itchy butt*hole?
I have been grinding my teeth since I was very young and my grandmother use to tell me that teeth grinding was caused by worms and usually associated with an itchy butt*hole which I had and still have. I grew up in the sticks so our idea of bathing was jumping in the pond, which would explain the worms. Now I am not sure if she made the itchy part up because she saw me scratching or if she was on to something. Also when I was 6 I use to bust grandma drinking 40%26#039;s of Milwaukee’s best and then trying to hide it in her perfume collection so either those were some big bottles of perfume or they were 40’s with a Chanel label on it, so maybe her credibility is shot, I don’t know. Do I have worms or am I the victim of a partially wiped a*s. What are your thoughts?

Reply:Do you wake up in the morning with smelly fingers? If so I would say it%26#039;s an itchy butt. Althought it doesn%26#039;t prove if you have worms or not. You shouldn%26#039;t worry so much. If you grew up in the country then having worms can be a benefit. Especially if you like to fish.
Reply:You%26#039;d definately know it if you had worms for that long. Or it%26#039;s just not clean enough down there, your allergic to something you wipe with, your allergic to something your clothes were washed in, your clothes period, your underwear, and believe it or not even a liver problem could cause it, Hemoroids itch.
Reply:It could be that you have Thread Worms. Thread worms are tiny worms. They are about 1 cm in length, and look like white cotton threads.
You catch thread worms by swallowing the eggs. These hatch out in your intestine, and quickly develop into adult worms. The female worms pop out of your anus at night, and lay their eggs on the skin around the anus.
The eggs are picked up on fingers, and (horrible thought!) can be transferred back to the mouth and swallowed again. Once safely inside the body, they develop into adults, and start laying more eggs.
Eggs on the fingers can be spread to other members of the family, or to close friends. They can also drop off, and become part of general household dust.
The main symptom is intense itching of the anal area, especially at night. This causes scratching.
Of course, by scratching, you pick up eggs on your fingers, which means the eggs can be spread about.
Some people have no symptoms at all.
Thread worms are harmless. They do not interfere with digestion, or stunt growth.
However, they can be very irritating, and lead to disturbed sleep. Some children can develop sore bottoms because of the itching.
What is the treatment?
There are several treatments available. Piperazine is the commonest drug used in the UK, and is available for sale at the chemist. There are several different brands of treatment available, and you can ask you pharmacist for advice. Often a mild dose of laxative is included.
It is best to treat the whole family, on the same day. The treatment can be repeated 2 weeks later, to get rid of any newly hatched worms.
How can I stop them coming back?
Re-infection is very common. Here are some suggestions for reducing the risk of catching these pesky worms.
Rules for the infected person
Keep nails cut short
Wear pyjamas or pants in bed
Have a bath each morning, making sure the bottom is thoroughly washed
Don%26#039;t share towels
Change and wash underwear and pyjamas daily
I would suggest you see your dortor for a diagnosis...

Reply:pinworms can cause the latter symptom that you mentioned. However doctors are still debating whether teeth grinding is also caused by pinworms. The itching is definately cause by pinworms. See a doctor.

Teeth Grinding During Pregnancy?
I%26#039;m 11 weeks pregnant and have been grinding my teeth at night. I never used to do this, and I don%26#039;t do it every night. But several times a week, I wake up in the middle of the night and find myself grinding my teeth (maybe the grinding wakes me up...I don%26#039;t know).
I read that maybe I%26#039;m not getting enough calcium. I don%26#039;t understand how that can be, when I%26#039;m taking a prenatal daily(I know it doesn%26#039;t give you a lot of calcium), eat and drink a few servings of dairy a day, AND I take a calcium supplement twice a day. Could I still be calcium-deficient? Or could it be something else?
This has been happening off and on since I was about 9 weeks pregnant. I think I%26#039;m going to call the doctor this week about it. I appreciate any input %26amp; personal experiences.
Teeth Grinding During Pregnancy?
i am a serious teeth grinder whether or not i am pregnant. i have used mouth gaurds and while they do protect your teeth, they do not prevent you from clenching your jaw, which becomes very painful after a while. what i would recommend is buying a nose clip like what swimmers wear (costs about $4). sounds crazy right? this is how it works: if you close off your nasal passages (i suggest only 1/2way for comfort purposes) you have to breath through your mouth. if your mouth is open, you cannot grind your teeth. the only thing is that your mouth will become dry so you may need a cup of water next to your bed.
btw, unfortunately, dr.s are of no help with teeth grinding. unless you were to see like a tmj specialist, which is very costly and insurance does not cover it. good luck!
Reply:im a tooth grinder! can i suggest a mouth plate. i got mine made from the dentist but this was quite expensive. it acts as a barrier between teeth so that no damage is done whilst grinding. from memory the GP can give you some excersizes that can help relax the muscles in your jaw whilst your awake, but when you are asleep, you are doing it subconsciously so you are not in control of preventing it: try a mouth gaurd and see how you go. it takes a while to get used to it! :)

Your worried about something before your sleep, try relaxing before you sleep and don%26#039;t worry about anything.
Reply:look in the mirror and see if your jaw is misaligned, try opening and shutting it, if it opens to one side its not in proper alignment and needs adjusted

Teeth grinding at night 6 year old?
hi all..
tanvi, my 5.6 yrs old daughter has been into this teeth grinding for almost 7 months now. despite giving all the psychological relaxation( which she has no reason to be upset), deworming( several times), playfulness in the night before rolling out to sleep so that she is relaxed %26amp; happy, we have , as parents tried all the things to make her quit her grinding habit... but alas to no avail...!!
last few days, in fact the grinding noise is more intensified..which not only makes us worry about her teeth conditions etc, but also robs our sleep ( she sleeps with us in our room only)..the habit is also referred to as %26quot;bruxism%26quot;.. but having known all this.. we are still not able to figure out the %26quot;why%26quot;, %26quot;till when%26quot;, %26amp; %26quot;how to cure%26quot; it for her...
shall expect experts %26amp; parents who have been able to deal with this for their children to help me plz..

Teeth grinding at night 6 year old?
My 5 yr old daughter does it too, I took her to the drs and he said it was because of stress!! Been down the school and spoke to the teachers to see if there was any problems, they said no, she%26#039;s a bright and popular girl with whom they have no worries with, I%26#039;ve spoke to her and she says she%26#039;s happy and has no problems either. So I too am baffled, it%26#039;s so upsetting (and sometimes annoying) My 4 yr old daughter has started doing it now too. Luckily, so far, no problems with the dentist when we went to visit. I%26#039;m baffled! I%26#039;d like a cure and a reason why too :(
Hope you have better luck finding out than I did x
Reply:I%26#039;m not sure there is anything you can do to stop the grinding other than what you%26#039;ve tried. The only recourse at this point is to see a dentist and have her fitted for a mouth guard. This won%26#039;t stop the grinding, but it will protect her teeth and will make it harder for her to bite down hard which will help the soreness in her jaw. Good luck!

Info on Teeth Grinding?
I recently have started grinding my teeth in my sleep, and it feels horrible every morning. I wake up with a headache, sore teeth, sore jaw, etc. I know there are a lot of sites with info on teeth grinding, but does anyone here that has TMJ have any ideas behind why we grind our teeth?
Info on Teeth Grinding?
its one of those reflexes from your ancestorial monkey which you have inherited.
You may have noticed that it is a common reflex in many animals to grind /bare their teeth when provoked or stressed.
When you are stressed you dream stressful things and so you bare your teeth/ grind them to pieces.
Get a night guard for your teeth before you grind them to bits... they can fracture and chip and get shorter if ur not careful.
Reply:The medical term is bruxism. Stress has got a lot to do with it. You need to manage the stressful factors affecting your life.
Reply:there is no real anwser on why people grind their teeth in thier sleep but you should really get a mouth gard

Severe teeth grinding?
What do you consider as severe teeth grinding? I do that while sleeping without knowing since I was a child. A couple years ago, I woke up with a pain on my jar. My physician said that I got jaw arthritis (or temporomandibular arthrosis, temporomandibular disorder, temporomandibular joint derangement --- I forgot what exactly I was told). I heard the sound of my teeth grinding when my sister recorded it while I was sleeping, though, it sounded so creepy! It sounded like cricket or some kind of bugs! Does my teeth grinding have to be considered as severe?
Severe teeth grinding?
see your dentist he can give you a mouth guard that might help
Reply:Yes. See a specialist for treatment. It can lead to problems with your jaw alignment which is painful and may require surgical correction.
Reply:Have your dentist make you a mouth guard if it%26#039;s causing you pain.
Reply:Possibly, it depends on the amount of damage that it has done. But they make many wonderful products now to help prevent it. Make sure to get that checked out before it gets too bad.
Take care, Happy New Years!
Reply:It%26#039;s called bruxism. Try to see a dentist, because grinding can weaken even break your teeth. One of the result is Temporomandibular disorder, you feel pain at your TMJ and the others are oversensitive teeth, trauma, gingival (gum) inflammation, etc. Bruxism often affects persons with nervous tension such as anger, pain, or frustration, and/or persons with aggressive, hurried, overly competitive tendencies, or using antidepressants.
The treatment will be due to the etiologic factors.

you can buy a teeth guard to wear at night while you sleep...it protects your teeth and jaw from the effects of grinding or clenching.....they are selling it over the counter now and i think it works great..i have less pain in my jaw and muscles...it%26#039;s called Nightguard.... I got mine at Walgreens. it was less than $20 i think. much cheaper than the price the dentist quoted me for one
Check big pharmacies like CVS or Eckerds they may have it also.
I see online you can get it also if you can%26#039;t get it in a store

Reply:I did this same thing. You could get one of those teeth guards. I didn%26#039;t like them because trying to get it off, I was afraid I was going to rip my teeth out, and yes I learned that I have the TMJ (temporalmandibular joint arthritis). How I found out I had the TMJ was I had an earache for 2 wks. and when the ear drops didn%26#039;t work, I thought I had an ear infection. The doctor told me it was the TMJ bothering me and not an earache, although he said if I didn%26#039;t quit using the ear drops I would get an ear infection. Now, when my ears hurt, I%26#039;ve no way of know (w/o seeing a doctor) if it%26#039;s the TMJ or an actual earache. The doctor described TMJ to me as my jaws were uneven and didn%26#039;t work the same when I%26#039;d open and shut my mouth. He said, it%26#039;s like a door with a broken hinge and you have to lift up on it to close it. Question about teeth grinding?
Long story short. Had pain in top left teeth area, then it jumped to top right area. Assumed I had to get 2 root canals. Went to dentist told him my symptoms. Said it sound like I%26#039;m grinding my teeth at night but doens%26#039;t know for sure until he views my x-rays. I have a feeling it is teeth grinding bc last night I had pains on top left teeth and now bottom left. 2 questions. 1. is that normal teeth grinding symptoms, having my pain jump all over? 2. if I end up having to sleep with a mouth guard, won%26#039;t I still be grinding causing pain in my mouth but not harming my teeth?

It is possible that your grinding could affect different teeth. It usually seems to stay on one side, but I%26#039;m sure there could be some that don%26#039;t. Wearing a night guard will not stop the clenching/grinding, but it will keep you from putting total forces in one area. You will slide on the smooth plane of the appliance. I wear one, I still wake up some mornings with an area that seems more tender, but it goes away quickly. I%26#039;m a big proponent of grinding appliances. I think they really save you from major dental problems later on......if you wear them of course.. Good luck.
The ones made for you will work better than the ones bought in the store.
Reply:it%26#039;s normal to grind your teeth at night but it%26#039;s not good my mom does it so do my friends i don%26#039;t know how to make it stop for sure but it%26#039;s pretty normal
Reply:I was reading up on the grinding a few months ago and bought a mouthpiece but it pretty much drives me nuts to have it in my mouth. I did read however, that things like caffeine (and alcohol?) increase grinding. It may be better to work on relaxation techniques to reduce tension in your jaw. i know I have a habit throughout the day of holding tension in my jaw and sort of %26#039;grimacing%26#039;. Try to become aware of the muscles there and then try to work out a way to let them relax
Reply:I had problems with my TMJ from clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth at night. My dentist made me a mouth guard that fits only on my two top front teeth. This keeps my teeth from touching therefore preventing me from grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw. I sleep a lot better now and don%26#039;t wake up with headaches anymore. It takes a little while to get use to the piece, but it eventually becomes second nature to put it in.
Reply:you can buy a night guard at wallmart for about 18 dollars, yeah i know that%26#039;s kind of expensive, but i do the same thing and it also helps with overbite.
hope you find somting that works!

Teeth Grinding?
Sometimes I have a headache and when I stop to think about it, I realize my jaw is shut really tight, so I just loosen my jaw and it goes away.... until a few hours later I realize I%26#039;m doing it again!?!?
What causes this? How do I stop?!!?
I%26#039;m not stressed at all!!
Teeth Grinding?
My son has a problem with teeth grinding, both when awake and asleep. His dentist has told us that it is NOT caused by stress and it is NOT something he can control. He suggested gently reminding him not to grind when I notice him doing it with the hope that eventually he will be able to notice that he is grinding and stop himself. Because he is only 11 he cannot get a mouth guard (too expensive to make a new one every time he loses a baby tooth) but the doctor suggested getting one of those athletic mouth guards that you boil and bite to make a custom fit for him to wear at night. You may want to try the same before investing in an expensive piece of dental equipment. I know people who have dished out $600-$700 only to find that they couldn%26#039;t wear it for one reason or another.
Good luck, and remember not to blame yourself. It is probably not something you can control.

Reply:I don%26#039;t know but I strongly suggest you ask your dentist for a mouth guard for when your sleeping or you could do some serious damage to your teeth. I don%26#039;t do it when I%26#039;m awake but I%26#039;ve woke myself up from grinding my teeth in my sleep.
Reply:Talk to your dentist about getting a mouth guard. You can wear it at night to stop the grinding, because if you%26#039;re doing it in the day you%26#039;re most likely doing it at night too.

Reply:go see your dentist and ask about getting an occlusal guard. They will keep yoru teeth from actually touching when you are clenching and take off some of the pressure. it will also keep you from damaging your teeth.

Does anone have any tips on how to get a 1 yr old to stop grininding her teeth?? My 2 yr old did it a little, but not for very long, then she just stopped.
Teeth Grinding?
It will probably just pass in time, but teeth grinding is usually caused by a magnesium deficiency. Try offering her foods high in magnesium. You can also give her Epsom salt baths to see if it improves. Start out using 1/4 of a cup and move your way up to a full cup.
Reply:My son%26#039;s dentist said not to worry about it until the age of 9. He will eventually stop doing it.
Reply:she%26#039;ll quit when her teeth stop bothering her i have a 1 yr old and she does that all the time too and thats what her doctor said
Reply:My 19 month old does that too!! Makes your hair stand up on end, doesn%26#039;t it??
My doctor said not to worry, and not to make a fuss. She is just discovering her teeth, and having a feel. It will stop, once she has all her teeth at the latest. Often teething pain can start, or escalate, the grinding. If it keeps going for some time, distract her by offering her something to eat (fruit) or drink, or even just by singing or playing together.
Reply:My little guy does it too. The top tooth is just now in enough to grind and it gives me the chills. I think they do it because it%26#039;s a new sensation. Other kids I%26#039;ve known outgrew it quite quickly. I don%26#039;t know how much you can do to stop it, but trying offering teething toys.
Reply:My 15 month daughter did this up until a week ago; it was awful! My mom and grandmother said it was probably teething, which I think was right because she got a new molar last week. As a relief, for both of us, I would give her th very small cuddly lamb that she sleeps with, and she would clamp down on the nose just the way she was grinding. We can%26#039;t give her teething rings because she can bite through them with her front teeth.
Reply:There is nothing you can do to stop it because it is an involuntary act that is done unconsciously. Also, they do not always just grow out of it or stop at a certain age, actually most of the time it follows them into adulthood. I did it as a baby and still do it today, my father did it as a baby and still does it today, my daughter did it as a baby and is 3 years old and still does it.

how can i stop i have seen a denist and he wants to make a mouth guard for a very high price i cannot afford i have had some of my back teeth pulled because of breaking them the cost of root canal is so high and my insurance does not pay for it what else can i do

maybe try one of those sports mouth guards that you can buy at any sporting goods store in place of a dental mouth guard. sorry about the problems you are having. insurance...they love to take our money when we are healthy, but hate to oay out.My little boy had to have dental surgery, at the hospital when he was 3, the dentist refused to do any work any other way, insurance refused to pay....best wishes
Reply:There is a guard I think that you can get from the drug store. Saw it on TV, go to CVS or RiteAid and grab one.

Reply:try wearing a mouth guard like ones the football players wear. Cheaper and it may just work. If not, the dentist made one will be cheaper in the long run instead of paying for so much dental work, the time and pain involved.....
Reply:You can get a mouthpiece at wal-mart or Target in the sporting goods section. Football players %26amp; boxers use them to protect their teeth, but you could use it at night to make the grinding less damaging.

Teeth grinding?
my teeth are really small in the back from top to bottom and i was wondering if they can grow back into full size, cause now they are half the size they are.
Teeth grinding?
They do not grow back. If you are still grinding your teeth, consult your dentist about having some type of appliance/guard/splint made. It will not stop the grinding (bruxism) but it will protect your teeth from more damage.
Also, your dentist can advise you on if you should consider some type of restoration of your back teeth.
Reply:i don%26#039;t think they%26#039;ll grow back, sry
Reply:you cannot get them to grow back to full size. the best thing is to see a dentist who will probably be able to cap or crown them so they will be the correct size. if you grind your teeth, this is what can happen. you need to use a mouth guard at night.
Reply:They wont grow back. However if your grinding your teeth, go see your dentist to make you a night guard to prevent you from grinding on your teeth and damaging them.
Reply:Actually, ask about a splint for your teeth. I am in the process of getting one. It is better then a night guard cause a night guard just protects your teeth from grinding against eachother. You still grind and over time, your teeth will still lose the enamel as they have been doing. A splint is worn like a night guard but actually fits in a way to where you are unable to grind at all. I am a heavy grinder and I actually got my last Wisdom Tooth pulled this afternoon (ouch!) and once it fully heals, I am getting a splint. Obviously it is more expensive then a night guard but if you are concerned, this might be the way to go. Talk it over with your dentist. Sorry.... teeth dont grow back! =(
Reply:My brother while sleeping would grind his teeth but the doctor gave him a plastic tooth ring to have while he%26#039;s sleeping. The thing is it he doesn%26#039;t grind his teeth during the day only at night. Now he is fine his teeth is normal. But in your case it would seem this would take place if you were a young person. If not by all means see a dentist.

Teeth Grinding?
I grind my teeth almost every night. How do I stop. I have a mouth guard and that created more problems with my jaw, besides I don%26#039;t want a bandage I want a solution.
Teeth Grinding?
Well you first need to understand why your body feels the need to grind your teeth. Its a way of telling you that its stressed and its releasing that stress through teeth grinding. It happens mostly for kids but it occurs for adults as well. I%26#039;m 24 and it happens to me as well frequently. I can only prevent it by finding a way to relieve the stress or relieve my body somehow or just use a mouth guard as well. I keep pretty physically active so that helps. The mouth guard helps me in my case cause my body knows somethings there and doesnt grind. But its probably different for you.
Reply:this is normally caused by stress. you need to relax. i had this problem and had to have teeth rebuilt because i had ground them down all the way to the nerves. it looked like cheetos stuck in my teeth where the nerve was exposed and it hurt when any thing including air touched it.
Reply:Medical term is %26quot;bruxing.%26quot; I had trouble with the mouth guard the dentist made me, but later bought one like the athletes use. Drop it in hot water to soften, then bight gently down on it. It was softer...even if I did unknowingly spit it out during the night. She probably has an uneven bite and there is a simple dental procedure to correct it. She may also be under stress. Bruxing can lead to TMJD (transmissible joint disorder) and headaches. She really needs to see a doc or a dentist.
Reply:not a good idea,try chewing sugarfree gum
Reply:Yes this is called %26quot;Bruxism%26quot; one cause can stress as stated by previous post... (try meditation CD%26#039;s before bed) and another reason (apparently) is a lack of zinc in your vitamins and minerals intake..

Yes, I grind my teeth when I sleep. My dentist made me a TMJ splint that u wear when ur asleep. It does not prevent u from grinding ur teeth, but it does help with the pain.

Like your dentist said, you should wear a mouth guard.
Reply:There are 2 things you can do, you can go the cheap route or the expensive route. You can get a bite plate from the dentist specially molded to your teeth. If that%26#039;s too expensive just go to a like a sports store and get a mouth guard. Then you just put in hot water and you can mold it to your teeth. Either way you just wear it when you go to bed at night.
Reply:go to the local drug store. some grocery stores also sell it. buy the Doctors Night Guard. it works great. i wear it every night because i also grind my teeth. no more pain! you can trim it with scissors to make it even more comfortable. full instructions are in the box.

My 6 year old grinds her teeth when she sleeps. Is there any way I can get her to stop?
Teeth grinding?
there is no way to stop teeth grinding. you can only get a mouth gaurd to protect the teeth. i found out i grid my teeth at night sometimes, and asked the dentist. he recommended to guards in the store for something cheap, or you can pay a big peice of change for a custom gaurd. but either way you can%26#039;t stop it. but it could be a phase too, my boyfriend hasn%26#039;t complained about my grinding in about 4 months and i haven%26#039;t woke myself up or had a sore jaw. so i guess it just stopped. good luck, maybe she%26#039;ll stopm on her own soon.
Reply:Go to the dentist and have her fitted for a night gaurd. Its like a mouth piece athletes wear. That’s what they did for me.

Reply:Dentists will take a cast of ones mouth and have a mouthpiece made. This should be worn while asleep to prevent tooth grinding which can result in abnormal tooth wear.
Reply:I asked my dentist about that and he said it was stress. We had just had a new baby and my 3 year old was having a hard time with it. Now it has stopped.
Reply:does she have an ear ache or ear infection? that is one reason why they do it and especially at night when they are relaxed and might notice the pain more. your teeth are connected to the nerve endings in the middle ear and alot of children find that grinding their teeth relieves the pain from and ear ache or infection.. id take her to an ear doctor or your peds. just to have it checked out and if that%26#039;s not the problem then take her to a dentist and have her fitted for a teeth guard that will save her teeth from the grinding
Reply:My dentists said he will not do anything about my 5 yr old son grinding his teeth till his permanent teeth grow in. He said there is no use in protecting the baby teeth at this time. So as much as I would like my son to have a guard.. the densit will not help me he thinks that it could become a choking hazard also. Good luck.
Also says it has something to do with their Rim sleep patterns.. not sure what all that means.

Teeth Grinding??
I grind my teeth at night when I%26#039;m asleep. What can I do to prevent doing this.
Teeth Grinding??
You can buy a mouth guard and insert it before bedtime. If you are having no other helth problems, try that. However, if teeth grinding is an issue along with other symptoms, it can be a medical issue. Hope this helps!!
Reply:You might have TMJ. Go see your dentist about getting fitted for a bite splint. They can be costly, but you will sleep better and your teeth will thank you.
Reply:Is it doing any harm? Has your dentist told you of accelerated wear facets? Do you waken with sore jaw muscles? If you answer no to these, then there is no indication for treatment.
Nothing can stop you grinding, and occlusal splints (made by a dentist) act by allowing you to wear away the splint instead of your teeth.

My daughter is 1 yr old. She grinds the few teeth she has. How do I get her to stop?
Teeth grinding?
Your baby may be stressed.
What is your home routine like? Is it quiet and predictable? Can your baby expect that after a comes b and then comes c? Babies and young children need the safe predictability of a routine, as well as quiet places to be, without overwhelming activity and noise. Read %26quot;You Are Your Child%26#039;s First Teacher%26quot; by Rahima Baldwin.
Good luck and blessings.
Reply:Some kids just do that and stop when they%26#039;re older. Hard to believe, but when my son did it, my Dr. said it was stress.
Reply:I grind and clench in the middle of the night. If you go to her dentist, they can give you a night guard so it won%26#039;t ruin her teeth.

Reply:Stress?! Hardly! If this is the only atypical behavior you%26#039;ve noticed, don%26#039;t worry. My son (a very calm child from a calm and loving home) did that at the same age. The pediatrician said he was just trying to use his teeth to bite down on his gums to make them feel better. She%26#039;s probably just getting more teeth. But when in doubt, call the ped - that%26#039;s what they%26#039;re there for!

I have an 8 month old daughter and she has 4 teeth, the top two and the bottom two. She grinds her teeth. Is this normal? Why does she do this? How can stop her?
Teeth grinding?
YES IT IS NORMAL, YOU CANT STOP IT BUT YOU CAN GIVE HER SOMETHING TO CHEW ON. SHE IS PROBALY TEETHING, MY DAUGHTER DID THAT ALSO NOW SHE IS 15 MONTHS AND STILL DOES IT SOMETIMES
Reply:Does she do it while sleeping or awake, or both? Chances are that she is just in pain from new teeth coming in and grinding gives her some relief. You might try a teething ring.
Reply:My son was three and he had this problem. My dentist told me that he may have intentinal parasites. I was suppose to get a mouth guard but i never did nor did i do anything about the teeth grinding because the teeth fell out and some how he got over it.
Reply:Yes it is normal, and it will drive you nutz!
If it presists past the infant stages, then you may want to look into it further.
Reply:yes my son did it on and off it drives you mad, i used to give him a clean dry face cloth sometimes id freeze it slightly seemed to work and it stopped the noise....

Teeth Grinding?
My 2 year old GRINDS her teeth its annoying to me and I dont want her to ruin her teeth. Is there a way that anyone knows of that will stop her from doing it??
Teeth Grinding?
Teeth grinding (also called bruxism) is a tough one. The first thing to remember is that it is EXTREMELY unlikely that any child or adult will grind their teeth away to nothing. The body repairs some of this.
The short answer is - the only way to stop the wear on the teeth is a mouth guard which can be made at the dentist. Two problems I have with these - #1: How many 2 year onlds would wear one of these all night and actually sleep, and - #2: Why force this on someone if they will eventually outgrow it and the risk of permanent damage is almost zero?
Talk to your pediatrician and dentist and see if they feel that the bruxism is excessive. If so, maybe a referral to a pediatric dentist is needed. But 99 times out of 100 this isn%26#039;t necessary - either they wont grind enough enamel to cause permanent damage (I know, it SOUNDS bad but usually doesn%26#039;t really wear away that much) - or they will outgrow it.
True, stress can make it worse - but this is usually not much of an issue for most 2 year olds. The stress level is usually much higher in the parent of a 2yo teeth grinder then in the 2yo herself!
Reply:Yeah, give her a mouth guard.
Reply:Talk to your dentist
Reply:Does she do it in the daytime or at night? A mouth gaurd obviously will only work at night, and honestly I%26#039;m not sure they are recommended for such a young age. My son did this also around that age, in the daytime. It is pretty common and usually they outgrow it, he did pretty quickly. I wouldn%26#039;t worry about it too much, especially because she still has her baby teeth which will be replaced.
Reply:Usually when children grind their teeth it is because they are feeling stressed. Yes, 2 year olds can feel stressed. Has anything changed recently? Your child is doing this is a stress reliever and/or attention getter. The best thing to do is ignore it and it will go away.

Reply:I have a 2 1/2 year old that does this also. She doesn%26#039;t do it all the time but enough to make me worry and yes it annoys me too.....almost as bad as fingernails down a chalkboard. I brought it up to my pediatrician and he said it%26#039;s more common then you think and that they actually outgrow it by 3 most of the time. It%26#039;s been six months since the visit and I notice she has decreased a bit. He said it didn%26#039;t really have anything to do with stress but more of them figuring out they can do it, that it makes noise and it gets a reaction out of the adults. Once I stopped worrying about it and didn%26#039;t mention it to her when she did it it started to decrease. Good luck :)

Teeth Grinding?
I grind my teeth or clench my jaw, unconsciously when im tired or stressed, and often when im driving my car! Sounds weird I know, that doesnt so much bother me, but I grind my teeth quite noisily when I sleep and I really wish i didnt. It wakes up my partner, and I end up with a sore jaw. Apart from consciously trying not to do it, does anyone have any advice or insight into what causes it, and how to stop?
Teeth Grinding?
My sister does it in her sleep, too, and she uses a grind guard at night. I do it when I%26#039;m stressed, too, and usually catch myself and try to relax, or do something else to release the pressure, like squeezing a stress ball, or clenching my hands instead.
Here%26#039;s some info for you:

Reply:yep, do go to dentist he or she will give you something that you put on your teeth at night, i forgot the name of that stuff. It helps, otherwise you are gonna end up sharpening your teeth every night.
Reply:If you saw a consultant they%26#039;d probably prescribe a mild sedative to relax you. You might benefit from taking up yoga - and learning meditation techniques. Both these teach you to release tension held in the body. Thus when you feel tense you can actively do something to put your body/jaw at ease, and you can prepare yourself for sleep by removing all tension before you go to bed.

I went to the dentist and he gave me a night guard. its quiet uncomfortable but it works..
I had cracked my teeth and existing fillings which caused sensitivity. i ended up spending $1000 fixing my teeth because of my grinding.... so make sure you go see the dentist
Reply:There%26#039;s nightguards they sell at the drugstore or from your dentist. There%26#039;s ones you boil and mold to your teeth. Don%26#039;t use a sports guard though. Reply:you need to get a bite guard you can make an appointment with the dentist to make you one(they custom make you one to fit your mouth) if you dont you could risk getting tmj(when jaw starts clicking) if you dont want to go to the dentist or you think you cant afford one(could be a reasonable price, check with your dentist first) or you can go to a sports store and getting a bite gaurd there, it is bulkier, but it does the trick.i have the same problem.the dentist i work with made me one.good luck to you

Teeth grinding??
My 4 year old daughter grinds her teeth HORRIBLY every night. I can%26#039;t even sleep b/c I can hear it from the other room. I asked her dentist what to do and she said that it%26#039;s normal for children to do this b/c they are getting ready to lose their baby teeth (But she%26#039;s been doing this since she was 3, and will be 5 in June!), I asked another dentist just for a second opinion and she said the same, and also that there are no night time mouth guards for children her age.
Her front teeth are getting so messed up, they look like they are chipped and you can see the enamal going away...my question is:
Is there ANYTHING that I can possibly do?? I don%26#039;t want her teeth to get even more damaged, and I need some SLEEP!
PLEASE HELP!
(serious answers please)
Teeth grinding??
We had this problem with our (now 12) yr old. He did this until we took him to a sleep center for this and other problems. They changed his entire sleep routine. He has no t.v. or videos for an hour before bed, nothing to eat or drink 2 hours before bed and his wake and sleep routine needs to be the same 7 days a week, (sorry no sleeping in on weekends) and his room is cool (65 degrees) We were told before that it was caused by a form of anxiety that was manifesting at night but that it wasn%26#039;t harmful. He also had bad dreams, and restless sleep. They found at the sleep study and ENT that he had acid reflux. The changes in diet and routine has helped him sleep better, with no teeth grinding. This is the first time since was three (9yrs) that I haven%26#039;t heard his teeth grinding at night. I am glad they didn%26#039;t give us a night guard, because I would never have found out what the underlying cause was.
Reply:Go get a mouth piece made from your dentist if its really bothering you. They can do an impression and make a mouth guar from that. I dont think its that expensive either.

Sometimes we recommend adults who grind there teeth in the sleep to change the evening routine and diet. Softer foods and calm evening might what she needs. Last 40 min before person goes to bed are very important.
Good luck.

Reply:for the sleep sleep with ear plugs for her teeth....... gum? yea try giving her gum!
Reply:how is her sleeping habits?
Sometimes we recommend adults who grind there teeth in the sleep to change the evening routine and diet. Softer foods and calm evening might what she needs. Last 40 min before person goes to bed are very important.
Good luck.
Reply:sometimes children and adults with sinus problems grind their teeth, that is what our doctor told me about my child

Teeth Grinding???
What causes it? What are treatment options?
I have this issue...I think its stress, but I don%26#039;t feel like I%26#039;ve been stressed out lately, but my boyfriend says i was grinding my teeth last night in my sleep. I have TMJ, is that a factor? What can I do?
Teeth Grinding???
Teeth grinding is an involuntary movement of the jaw while asleep. It could be stress or just a bad myofunctonal habit while asleep. What you can do is consult a dentist and they will recommend to you wearing mouthguard while sleeping. it stops the grinding and certain mouthguards also corrects TMJ, aligns malpositioned teeth and corrects mouth breathing. At first it will be uncomfortable to wear but you will get use to it in time.
Reply:It is a stress and nervous habit. TMJ is a factor. See your dentist about it. He can make you a %26quot;night guard%26quot; its simalar to what is used in some sports activities, but its custom made to fit your teeth. Instead of grinding your teeth your teeth will be protected by the %26quot;night guard%26quot;. Good Luck.
Reply:I grind my teeth very badly. I went to a dentist to have them make me a night guard which is like a retainer you wear to bed. It helps protect your teeth from the harmful grinding.
Also, try not to drink caffeine. Also, try to go to bed relaxed, not angry or worried about the next day.
Good luck!
Reply:TMJ is a big factor in it and so is stress you got both then your gonna end up grinding at night. Get a mouth garud to help with the grinding.

Teeth Grinding?
I find myself grinding my teeth almost constantly.....does anyone have any ideas as to why I do that?
Teeth Grinding?
stress might cause you to grind your teeth. ask your dentist about getting a mouth guard. its like this plastic-ish thing where you melt in the microwave so it soft then you put in on like a mouth guard and it hardens and protects your teeth!
Reply:It%26#039;s called bruxism and is a habit, usually triggered by stress. It can lead to problems with your teeth and jaw joint (TMJ). Discuss it with your dentist.
Here%26#039;s more information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruxism
Reply:you might have to talk to ur dentist and get a mouth guard to stop yourself from doing it... i assume that you mean during your sleep that you are doing this....?
Reply:see a dentist and thy can get you a mouth guard to protect your teeth, then find out what is bothering you to cause you to grind your teeth.
Reply:Tension. Something in your life or where you work or at school is causing tension. You are probably grinding your teeth without knowing about it. Talk to your dentist about it
and he can assist you (since you might end up cracking
a tooth in the long run and I%26#039;ve seen it occur).
Reply:You would need something which would distract from the grinding. A simple solution is chewing gum. While you are chewing the gum, then you would not grind the teeth. If you want anything more specific, then there are teeth guards available at Walmart and Target. You can put these guards, which cost around 20 dollars, between your back teeth, and they are not visible to another person. The guards are removable, and you can remove them anytime, e.g. while having food.
Reply:Tooth grinding is subconscious generally, and occurs usually at night. To stop it you need a sleep aprtner, who will wake you up, and try to negatively reinforce the behaviour
To protect your teeth from excessive wear you should wear a night guard.
Reply:told by a dentist that your brain thinks aligning yur teeth is a puzzle. subconscience is playing here. are you doing it in your sleep? a guard would be wise if so. if not, stress and frustration could be the factors.

i have been grinding my teeth alot in my sleep, i even woke up the other night with my jaw practically locked shut! what can i do to keep from doing this?
Teeth grinding?
please see your dentist and get a hard mouthpiece. The cheap soft ones you buy in a store can do more harm than good.
Reply:Theres these things you can buy it%26#039;s like a mouthguard that you put in when you sleep. Just go to your local drugstore and pick some up.
Reply:You should see your dentist and have a bite- plate made (they can be made in hard or soft material--the soft ones are cheaper) And they really work to prevent damage to your teeth enamel.
Reply:Things You’ll Need:
Stress Relief Products
Relaxing CDs
Relaxation Tapes
Relaxation Videos
Rubber mouthpiece
Step 1:
Make an appointment with your dentist, who will make a custom mouthpiece for you to wear at night. This will prevent further damage to your teeth and may reduce your tendency to grind.
Step 2:
Ask your dentist to file down your %26quot;high spots,%26quot; which are any teeth that interfere with a comfortable, aligned bite.
Step 3:
Hold a warm, damp cloth next to your face for 10 minutes before you go to bed to help calm your jaw muscles.
Step 4:
Relax before bedtime by meditating, taking a hot bath or stretching.
Step 5:
Reduce alcohol and caffeine consumption.
Step 6:
Learn to reduce stress. Take stress management classes and learn relaxation techniques.

How can stop my boyfriend grinding his teeth in his sleep.
Teeth Grinding?
oh god lucy i realy feel sorry for you would drive me mad but i dont know a cure only knock all the bloody things out then he cant grind them, lol
Reply:Remove his teeth!
Reply:Aside from the fact it annoys you it is doing serious damage to his teeth. Ask him to visit the dentist to get a gum shield.
Reply:you cant hes asleep...he doesnt know hes doing it...you can only stop him if you wakin him up......
Reply:Smack him...just kidding...he can get these things to wear from the dentist to help him stop grinding his teeth.
Reply:But a 99 cent mouthguard at Wally World/
Reply:What worked for me was a bite guard I got at the dentist. Fortunately now you can buy them in Wal Mart...it%26#039;s called the Night Guard I believe and works great. (I don%26#039;t ever have any extra cash so everytime my boyfriend does it I grab his mouth and hold it still lol)
Reply:you can buy a shield from your dentist that he puts over his teeth at night. Best thing ever, only costs about £10
Reply:Get a mouth piece for him.
I had one specially made for me because i would clench my jaw so tight every night to the point my jaw muscles got so tight, i had lock jaw. not fun.
grinding isnt as serious, but isnt healthy either. i%26#039;d say to pick up a mouth gaurd or mouth piece at a local store, have him mold it for his mouth, and pop that in before sleep. that%26#039;s basically the same thing as the device i had to have made, only its MUCH cheaper.
Reply:My twin sister and I used to do that in our sleep when we were little and my mom would come massage the side of our jaws where we were grinding and we would stop doing it, eventually we just completely quit.
Reply:some dentist give a gumshield like some sports people wear
in short go to your dentist
Reply:i do that the best thing to do is keep his mouth open (kissing in his sleeep)
Reply:Tell him to lay off the Drugs! Teeth Grinding is one of the biggest Sypmtoms of Coke, Crack, or Crank! Duh, you need to give him a Intervention already!
Reply:My son has always had this problem. The dentist recommended a mouth guard. It is a plastic device that fits over the teeth. It really helps. Grinding the teeth can damage them over time. You can call a dentist or look for one online.
Reply:go to a dentist-- they always have great solutions! if you can%26#039;t handle it that long, just stay up all night doin%26#039; what lovers do--aka KISSING!
that will definatly keep his mouth busy.
or you could just put a mouth guard in his mouth, that way he will grind-- but he will grind plastic!
either way good luck!
Reply:You can get a mouth guard either from the dental section of your pharmacy or your dentist can make one especially for his mouth.
Reply:There are some guards you can wear at night that help.
That grinding causes migraines alot of times. It also causes abnormal wearing of the tooth surfaces.
If the guard doesn%26#039;t help, he should go to a dentist that works with TMJ. They can try other treatments.
My friend stopped grinding when she stopped drinking coffee at night!
Reply:I would suggest getting a mouth gard they help the teeth not grind down and affect them.
My brother has the same problem and so he wears a mouth gard when he sleeps to help him not grind his teeth in the night.
Reply:try relaxation techniques. Dripping water, lavender, waterfalls, classical music, etc. while you sleep.
Also, a massage or certain breathing techniques just before bed may help.
If none of this help, get a football mouth piece and get him to wear it at night. If he does not like or cannot get used to the football piece, he needs to see his dentist for a more perfect impression. Grinding the teeth over a period of time causes excessive wear.
Reply:He is seriously stressed out about something that he isn%26#039;t able to either verbalize or control during his waking hours. Getting to the bottom of his inner turmoil will help immensely.
Reply:OOOOHHHH!!!....nipple time!
EDIT:
We all know the common answer by now.....geez, can%26#039;t a girl have fun?
Reply:Maybe he should go to a sleep clinic if it%26#039;s really that bad, he could be given something to help it.
Reply:Have him discuss it with his dentist, preferably someone who knows something about TMJ disorder. He may be able to get a nightguard of some kind.
Reply:They say it comes from intense frustration in waking life, or that you are in the middle of a decision making process, and indecisive...see if he is worried about something during the day that he doesn%26#039;t realise he is suppressing or maybe he knows but is having a hard time at work, relationships, money, etc...
You can get mouthguards made by his dentist to wear at night - they take impressions of his teeth and then a thin mouthguard is made from a clear %26#039;plastic%26#039; that can be put in at night and worn to prevent his teeth from getting worn down and stop the noise of the grinding. I think it doesn%26#039;t stop the movement or pressure on his TMJ (jaw) joint, so he can get damage to that joint, or headaches from his teeth grinding.
When I went through a stage of teethgrinding at night, I bought a store bought sports mouth guard (cheaper), but it was bigger than a thin ones the dentist makes - I don%26#039;t recommend it!!! lol But good luck...see if it is possibly something bothering him or weighing heavy on his mind...
Reply:he probably does that because he has mercury fillings. it is a common symptom. get them replaced. (or replace him). just kidding ;)
in the meantime, go to wal*mart and by a night guard in the pharmacy dept. you won%26#039;t hear it as much.
Reply:The dentist has several little varieties of bite guards that actually keep you from grinding your teeth in your sleep.
Reply:I used to do it when I was a child, turned out it was caused by a blocked nose. When I looked at the picture of DRPSHOLD I thought it was Fred West
and I got a fright.
Good Luck
Reply:Teeth grinding can be a symptom of having worms. May be worth doing a colon cleanse such as http://www.drnatura-eu.com/log.php which includes a full parasite cleanse.
Reply:it%26#039;s usually from stress.
i had to get a plate fitted to wear while i sleep which does actually stop the problem.
my boyfriend also does it but not as much as me. only when he%26#039;s stressed and he%26#039;s less stressed than me so he does it less!

Reply:You can%26#039;t, and most dentists will tell you not to worry. Realistically most toddlers go through a period of tooth grinding because their gums itch and their jaws hurt. It usually passes on its own and they rarely damage their teeth.
Sometime around age 5 if they continue to grind their teeth they will take preventative measures such as mouth guards to try to break the habit before the adult teeth come in.
However like thumb-sucking it is often the toddlers that were most strongly discouraged from doing so that continue past age 4.
Reply:I don%26#039;t think you can, hopefully she%26#039;ll grow out of it soon, my daughter%26#039;s been doing the same thing on and off for the last few months, it sounds terrible.

everytime im sleeping with some one, they always complain that i make a noise from my mouth..like im grinding my teeth. why is that? im so curious. have anyone experience it too?
Teeth grinding?
Yes my boyfriend does that, its annoying. Its not good for your teeth either, you should see a dentist. He just unconsiously moves his jaw from side to side grinding his teeth when he sleeps.
Reply:I think its a stress factor... try getting a mouth guard... similiar to what sports players wear... it helps... of course if you are not too embarrased to wear one...
Reply:I grind. My dentist made me a special mouth guard to protect my teeth. Go and visit one NOW. I waited and now I have reduced the length of my teeth, it has moved my jaw bone up to high and I am having to have extra dental work because of it (It costs AU$5,000).
Reply:Teeth grinding is done by a lot of people and is common. Since you have been told that you do this see your dentist and ask him about getting a mouth guard to wear at night.
Reply:Almost everyone grinds their teeth together while sleeping it can be a symptom of stress but it is considered to be a normal thing.
Problems can arise because while you sleep your brain cannot exert control on how much pressure your jaw puts on your teeth while you grind (crunch) them together.
For people under stress teeth ginding can get to the point where teeth can crack or chip and in the most extreme cases a person can actually cause ligament damage to the jaw.
Reply:Teeth grinding can happen for many reasons, but usually the #1 reason is stress. Another reason is you may have too many things on your mind and are anxious to resolve those issues.
Reply:i used to grind my teeth.. because i would wake up feeling clicks and aches on my jaws that could last for months.
could be due to stress factors, shape of your jaws etc.

i asked my son%26#039;s dentist that question and he said that it was normal. that alot of kids do it and that they will out grow it.
my son is 6 and he still does it. it drives me crazy but i guess he will stop eventually.
Reply:My daughter has been grinding her teeth since she started teething. I asked her dentist about it and she said that it is natural since they are still cutting teeth and because of the fact that it is uncomfortable for them.
Reply:She will stop on her own. She is probably cutting teeth right now. That was always the way i could tell if my daughter was teething or not. If it doesnt stop when she has all of her teeth, then i would go see a dentist about it. Until then i wouldnt worry to much.
Reply:My baby brother does that so I just give him peppermint or something.....i don%26#039;t know how to make them stop permanently.I wish my brother would stop....he%26#039;s one also!
Reply:I WORK FOR A DENTIST. ALL KIDS GRIND THERE TEETH. THERE ISN%26#039;T A LOT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT. IF THE GRINDING IS BAD YOU CAN TAKE THEM INTO A CHILD%26#039;S DENTIST AND THEY CAN COAT THERE TEETH. DONT WORRIE.

Does anyone have any sugestions on how i can stop grinding my teeth? I only do it while i am sleeping. Has anyone tried those mouth gaurds that you wear at night? And if so did they help?

I have heard that they work. They are quite expensive at the dentist office, but they make some that are quite comfortable, called splints. You can buy the sports guards in the store for cheap that you soak in hot water and bite on to shape them to your mouth. Try that, and if it works for you, go to the dentist and get one made. They have a couple different kinds, and they cost different amounts. It is important to stop grinding, though, because over time, you can wear your teeth down to nubs.
Reply:I have had my night guard for about 10 years and it has made a huge difference. I am about to get a new one at the end of this week from my dentist because my old one is worn out. It was well worth the money.
Reply:Please consult a dentist. You need a bruxism appliance, better known as a nightguard. Molds will be made of your mouth and a dental lab with frabricate an appliance for you. They work very well. Goodluck!
Reply:I use a mouth piece , like a football player uses . It takes time to get use to , but it works .
Reply:I answered a question like this yesterday, this is what i wrote,
%26quot; I do the same thing - my dentist thinks it%26#039;s from stress. I also do it during the day and don%26#039;t realize it right away. My doctor made a NITI for me it%26#039;s a night time gaurd that snaps on your front two teeth. It took a little while for me to get used to, but at least now I don%26#039;t wake up with my teeth hurting or a headache from my mouth being clenched so tight. I would highly recommend asking your dentist about it. I don%26#039;t have the greatest dental insurance, but even with the one I have it didn%26#039;t cost very much at all, it%26#039;s definetly worth it even if you don%26#039;t have insurance. %26quot;
