Teeth Grinding?

Sometimes I have a headache and when I stop to think about it, I realize my jaw is shut really tight, so I just loosen my jaw and it goes away.... until a few hours later I realize I%26#039;m doing it again!?!?

What causes this? How do I stop?!!?

I%26#039;m not stressed at all!!

Teeth Grinding?
My son has a problem with teeth grinding, both when awake and asleep. His dentist has told us that it is NOT caused by stress and it is NOT something he can control. He suggested gently reminding him not to grind when I notice him doing it with the hope that eventually he will be able to notice that he is grinding and stop himself. Because he is only 11 he cannot get a mouth guard (too expensive to make a new one every time he loses a baby tooth) but the doctor suggested getting one of those athletic mouth guards that you boil and bite to make a custom fit for him to wear at night. You may want to try the same before investing in an expensive piece of dental equipment. I know people who have dished out $600-$700 only to find that they couldn%26#039;t wear it for one reason or another.

Good luck, and remember not to blame yourself. It is probably not something you can control.

Reply:I don%26#039;t know but I strongly suggest you ask your dentist for a mouth guard for when your sleeping or you could do some serious damage to your teeth. I don%26#039;t do it when I%26#039;m awake but I%26#039;ve woke myself up from grinding my teeth in my sleep.
Reply:Talk to your dentist about getting a mouth guard. You can wear it at night to stop the grinding, because if you%26#039;re doing it in the day you%26#039;re most likely doing it at night too.
Reply:It%26#039;s probably a nervous habit. Just try to be more aware of it I guess.
Reply:yeah I heard that grinding your teeth isn%26#039;t good and it causes problems....about stopping it--chew gum more often?
Reply:i have had this problem since my 20%26#039;s and it all has to do with underlying stress inyour life, you might not be aware of it, but it%26#039;s affecting you, probably at nighttime when you least realize it, i had a rubber mold made for my teeth to wear at night in my 20%26#039;s and i ground a hole right through it, then i realized that i was stressed and was letting it out in my sleep!. try some anti anxiety drugs, that has helped me, either that or live with jaw pain and severe headaches! and they are NO FUN!
Reply:go see your dentist and ask about getting an occlusal guard. They will keep yoru teeth from actually touching when you are clenching and take off some of the pressure. it will also keep you from damaging your teeth.
