My son is 18 months old and he just started grinding his teeth. I thought he just had something he wasn%26#039;t suposed to have in his mouth, but there was nothing in there. Just little flecks of what probably is his tooth enamel. My nephew done this when he was little and he ended up having oral surgery when he was 3 because they couldn%26#039;t get him to quit. Anybody have any suggests on how I can get my son to quit grinding his teeth?
Teeth grinding?
First-it was probably not tooth enamel, thats very strong and would be very hard to get rid of. Second-what worked for me was telling my daughter to stop and then opening her mouth for her. After a few time all I had to do was tell her to stop and she would open her mouth, after about 2 months she just stopped doing it. Most kids do it a bit and grow out of it quickly. Good luck!
Reply:Ask the dentist if there is a mouth guard for toddlers. I use one at night.
Reply:they have little sucky things that you can get kids that do that while they sleep..
inquire at a grocery store.
Reply:Not quite sure, but I think it%26#039;s hereditary. I grind my teeth, and so does most members of my family.
Have you gone to see a specialist?
Reply:Nope. They seem to think it is fun. Just hope he stops in time.
Reply:lol start a orthodontist fund . . . the kid is probably gonna need braces
Reply:consult the dentist.
Reply:Teeth grinding is called bruxism, and I have it. I found out from my dentist that many people who have it start when they are very little, and it can lead to all sorts of dental problems.
The best thing to do is talk to a pediatric dentist about it. For adults, they have things called night guards. (I actually don%26#039;t use one, because they have to be fitted, and I grind so hard I grind through them fairly quickly, which is a pain when something costs $300-$400, and isn%26#039;t covered by insurance. I use a regular sports mouth guard that can be fitted by soaking it in warm water, and it does the same thing: cushion my teeth and make it hard for me to position my jaws in the right way to really grind them hard.) I believe they have them for little kids, as well, but your dentist can advise you. I, too, know people whose children have lost their teeth and needed surgery from grinding damage. When they fit an adult with a night guard, it%26#039;s fitted so it snaps in and is held tight, which keeps you from swallowing it during the night. I don%26#039;t know if they can do that for little kids, but since it%26#039;s a pervasive problem, I am sure there is something that a dentist can do.
Good luck!
Reply:You probably shouldn%26#039;t worry. It%26#039;s just a phase most babies go through. All 5 of my kids did it and they eventually stopped on their own. I would try brushing his teeth when he does it. It may mean that his teeth don%26#039;t feel clean to him. I don%26#039;t think it was tooth enamel that was in his mouth as that is very difficult to come off and wouldn%26#039;t come off by his grinding his teeth. Try not to give him cold drinks, he might have sensitive teeth. Also you can try putting your finger in his mouth each time he does it and a strict %26quot;NO%26quot; to let him know you don%26#039;t want him doing that. But that is only if the brushing doesn%26#039;t work. However, he just might like the noises that it makes.
Reply:go to store, go to sports section and find mouth guards.. they are soft plastic and you have to mold them with hot water! you can use a simple mouth piece nothing to expensive, just so your child will stop grinding teeth together.. this way he is only rubbing the plastic and its not harmful if he grinds the crap out of that... almost any dentist will tell you the same or chrge you some good $$ do do something similar! good luck,
p.s. baby teeth are usually ok and he is going to loose those teeth anyway... just make sure he doesnt grind the permanent teeth..
Reply:My 15 mo. old occasionally does this also. When she does it, I either brush her teeth as she%26#039;s really good about it (it gets her to stop and not do it again for several hours) or get her something to chew on. I hear that teeth grinding, in toddlers before age two, is either because of teething or they are agitated about something.
Reply:Bring him to a pediatric dentist asap, my daughter started around the same age...she is now 3 and has yellow looking holes in her two back molars and has to have surgery...this is upsetting because I make her brush, floss, etc...yet still her teeth are damaged due to this strange problem.
Reply:My daughters going to be 2 next month!I thought she was the only one!I%26#039;ve tried almost everything!Good Luck!
